A young woman lives in an unfinished apartment building in Bamako

Mali / A young woman lives in an unfinished apartment building in Bamako filled with many families displaced by the conflict in northern Mali. After Islamists separatists seized power in the north last April, they closed schools and imposed a harsh form of sharia law, creating a humanitarian crisis that left more than 230,000 people internally displaced, about 50,000 of whom fled to Bamako. Most are living in precarious conditions with difficulties paying rent and lack of access of health care, clean water, and other resources. In January, French military forces invaded Mali and retook much territory, though many northerns still fear instability and are not yet ready to return home. / UNHCR / G. Gordon / January 2013

Haida Maiga, a mother of four children and the second of two wives married to an animal herder and salesman, prays

Mali / Haida Maiga, a mother of four children and the second of two wives married to an animal herder and salesman, prays. Her family fled the northern Malian town of Gao two months ago along with her family after her husband was robbed by Islamist separatists who seized power last April. Their family was already tired of the harsh form of justice and retribution favored by the Islamists, but the robbery was the last straw. They left their seven room mud walled house and now rent cramped concrete rooms on the outskirts of Bamako. More than 230,000 people have been displaced by the conflict in total, and while the French troops have moved quickly, few believe that this means northern Mali is now stable. / UNHCR / G. Gordon / January 2013

Moctar Toure, 26, used to be a truck driver, but can't drive a truck now without his right hand

Mali/ Moctar Toure, 26, used to be a truck driver, but can\'t drive a truck now without his right hand. Islamists who sized power in northern Mali last April amputated his hand as punishment for stealing. Toure, who is from Gao, says he stole several guns and did so out of patriotism. It was his cousin, Aliou, who joined the Islamists, who turned him in. Unable to care for his wife and two year old son, he came to Bamako where he now sells cigarettes and sleeps on a tarp at a bus station. Islamists who seized power in Northern Mali last April imposed a harsh form of retributive justice, often amputating thieves and others who have committed crimes. Many people fled northern Mali and the situation has created more than 230,000 refugees and 50,000 internally displaced persons. UNHCR / G. Gordon / January 2013
