Hamsedtu Traore hangs laundry at the mosque where she's taken refugee after fleeing her home

Mali / Hamsedtu Traore hangs laundry at the mosque where she\'s taken refugee after fleeing her home in Tanka, a village near Timbuktu in northern Mali, seven months ago after Islamists separatists seize control. More than 50,000 internally displaced persons have fled to Bamako since Islamists separatists seized power last April and displaced more than 230,000 people in total. While a recent French military intervention retook much territory, few people believe northern Mali is stable yet. / UNHCR / G. Gordon / January 2013

Busses arrive in Bamako from Northern Mali

Mali / Busses arrive in Bamako from Northern Mali are very delayed by military roadblocks and checkpoints. Since last April when Islamist separatists seized Northern Mali, more than 230,000 people have been internally displaced, about 50,000 of whom have fled to Bamako. Almost all of them arrived by bus, paying anywhere from $15 to $120 per person depending on their route. Most of the internally displaced people are living in precarious conditions with difficulties paying rent and lack of access of health care, clean water, and other resources. In January, French military forces invaded Mali and retook much territory, though many northerns still fear instability and are not yet ready to return home. / UNHCR / G. Gordon / January 2013 \n
